Spong too strong at Afriman

Germany Powerman winner in 2009, our Jason Spong showed that his absence on the world circuit due to work commitments has not cost him his competitive edge in anyway after winning the 2010 Afriman Duathlon in very hot conditions at Rooiwal (between Warmbaths and Pretoria) at the weekend.

Spong took the lead of the 85-kilometre race (10km run, 70km bike, 5km run) within the first kilometre and gradually built a solid lead. By the time he was nearing the end of the bike leg his lead was sitting around four minutes.

ÔÇ£Then I bonked. The sugar levels just crashed,” said Spong. By that stage though he had a big enough lead to hold onto the win. The run was by no means an easy one, as it was held over gravel with only 500m on tar and also 500m on single track trail. The bike leg was a course of attrition, three laps of 23.3km, with┬áno major hills but long sections with a steady climb, and then a 5km run to finish off.

Spong covered the 85km race in 2hr 46min 53sec with Nico Sterk second in 2:49:41. Third went to Freddy Lampret 1min 19sec later. Sterk and Lampret passed a tiring Brand Du Plessis on the bike leg. Du Plessis’ 2010 was not the best year as he struggled throughout the year. Usually dominant in the Momentum I-flex National Duathlon Series, Du Plessis could only manage two wins, but did win the overall title.

For Spong the win was a welcome show of form as he is off to Malaysia in November to compete in the Powerman race there. ÔÇ£I have been with John Hamlett (coach of former Comrades Marathon winner Andrew Kelehe) now for over a year and we have been training hard. But with setting up the business this year [he has started his own company, spraying custom bicycles] it has not been easy. So I am really happy with the win. John and I are expecting big things in 2011.ÔÇØ
