Swim team in London

Eleven of our leading swimmers are in London for this week’s British Gas Swimming Championships, writes Mark Etheridge.

The event also serves as the British Olympic selection trials. The week-long event starts tomorrow and continues until next Saturday.

Explained team manager Anton Jordaan. “The agreement between SASCOC and Swimming South Africa is that a swimmer must swim the Olympic qualifying time twice ÔÇô once at the SA Olympic trials and once at an international event.

“So these guys are mainly seeking an international qualifying time.”

Two of our biggest drawcards are missing the London event. Cameron van der Burgh has already swum an international qualifiying time and there’s no need for him to be there. Plus, he’s also already experienced the pool to be used for the Olympics, having been part of a select group of our swimmers who visited London shortly ahead of the All Africa Games in Mozambique late last year.

And rising star Chad le Clos took ill shortly before the squad left for London and stayed home as a precaution.

Events to be swum are the 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 (women) and 1500-metre (men) freestyle races, 100 and 200m backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly and the 200 and 400m Individual Medleys.

The full line-up of Team SA is: Devon Myles Brown, Charl Crous, Heerden Herman, Franko Jonker, Amanda Loots, Kathryn Meaklim, Michael Meyer, Vanessa Mohr, Darren Murray, Karin Prinsloo and Leith Shankland.
