Here we look at the highlights from those who were in action Team SA at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Sunday
Tatjana Schoenmaker delivered when it mattered, winning the women’s 200m breaststroke gold in 2:21.92 and in doing so retaining the title she won when breaking through at the 2018 Gold Coast Games. The South African led from start to finish in the final and won comfortably, with 1.73sec between her and silver medallist Jenna Strauch of Australia
Chad Le Clos surged to the silver medal, being out-touched to a fourth successive gold by New Zealand’s Lewis Clareburt. Le Clos went out in lane five to set a fast pace, leading by 0.40sec at 50m, by 0.33 at 100m and 0.17 at 150m. But just as he seemed to have shaken off James Guy, Clareburt, in lane four, came through strongly, and got to the wall first with his final stroke
Selvyn Davids bossed the Rugby Sevens final against Fiji with an impressive kicking game which was used both as a weapon to pass and also to unlock the islanders’ defence. He also regularly found touch-finders when the oppositions were penalised, setting up lineouts from which South Africa could strike. He was man of the match in the 31-7 cruise
Kaylene Corbett, take a bow. So often in the slipstream of Schoenmaker, she turned up on the big occasion with a huge swim, clocking 2:23.67 and securing bronze in the women’s 200m breaststroke. Her final 50m was actually 0.71sec quicker than Schoenmaker’s, as she moved from fifth into the medals
Tatjana Schoenmaker qualified fastest for the women’s 200m breaststroke final with a sizzling final leg 36.41sec as she powered to victory in 2:21.76. American Lily King won world championship gold this year in 2:22.41
Angelo Davids scored another hat-trick to take his total to 10 tries for the tournament as Team SA reached the men’s Sevens rugby final. The 1.82m, 22-year-old was again clinical as he helped his team come from 12-7 down to beat Australia 24-12 in the semi-final.
Elmarie van der Berg grabbed 47 goals from 49 attempts as South Africa bounced back from their opening netball defeat to Jamaica on Saturday night by with an impressive display less than 24 hours later against Barbados. Van der Berg, the 20-year-old goal-shooter, played 45 minutes of the match and was central figure in the 91-36 victory
Chad Le Clos finished second in his 200m butterfly heat in 1:56.85 as he attempted to become the first swimmer in history to win four successive golds in the event in the Commonwealth Games. The race came exactly 10 years to the night that he beat Michael Phelps in the 200m butterfly at the 2012 London Olympics
Pieter Coetze won the second 50m backstroke semi-final in 24.81 with a powerful last 25 metres of the race. The South African teenager, who claimed the 100m backstroke gold on Saturday night, qualified fastest for the final
