Super Semenya races to another world best!

Semenya

Olympic and Commonwealth champion Caster Semenya continued her imperious track form with a world-leading 800m time in the Diamond League on Saturday, writes MARK ETHERIDGE.

Semenya was competing in the Eugene, Oregon leg of the lucrative series.

She clocked a time of 1min 55.92 seconds, which was also a meeting record. The previous record belonged to Burundi’s Francine Niyonsaba who set it at 1:56.72 five years ago.

Semenya oozed power and class as she unleashed her characteristically powerful end effort on the Hayward Field under the Eugene sun and once again won a stretch away from her rivals.

Runner-up was American Ajee Wilson in a season’s best 1:56.86 while Niyonsaba rounded off the podium in 1:56.88, also in a season’s best.

Semenya was one of a trio of South Africans in action, the others were Anaso Jobodwana and US-based Dominique Scott.

Jobodwana, disqualified in the semi-finals of the 200m at last month’s Commonwealth Games in Australia, took fourth in 20.42 seconds as Noah Lyles from the US won in a personal best 19.69sec.

Then it was Scott who raced to her second personal best time in the space of a week.

After setting a personal best in the 1,500m in Boston last Saturday, she took eighth spot in the 5,000m with a time of 15:10.23.

The winner was Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba in 14:26.89 with compatriot Letesenbet Gidey (14:30.29) next and a third African athlete, Hellen Obiri of Kenya, taking third in 14:35.03.
