Swanepoel sees off No1 seed

Bianca Swanepoel provided the first upset of the SATA International Futures tournament in Durban on Thursday.

And what an upset it was as she accounted for top seed Pooja Venkatesha of India. Swanepoel downed the top seed 7-5 5-7 6-4 in the quarter-finals.

There was another upset┬á as India’s sixth-seeded Rushmi Chakravarthi accounted for Zuzana Linhova (No 3) of the Czech Republic, 6-3 6-3.

There was good news for in-form Chanel Simmonds though as the second seed moved into the semi-finals.

She lost the first set to Slovakia’s Zuzana Lukranova 5-7 but battled back to go through 3-6-6-3 6-0.

Simmonds won last week’s ITF Futures event, also played in Durban.

There was little trouble for the seeds in the men’s singles on Thursday ÔÇô top-seeded Theodoros Angelenos of Greece beat British seventh-seed Joshua Milton 6-3 6-0

Raven Klaasen did not have much of a challenge from Russian Sergei Krotiouk, while Nikolaus Moser beat his fellow Austrian Richard Huckelshausen in two sets.

Adrien Bossel had an easy time as after just two games as Andrew Anderson, winner of last week’s ITF Futures event in Durban, retired injured.
