Team SA were in action across four codes at the African Games on Friday – swimming, badminton, soccer and table tennis. They had started the day in second spot on the medals table with 27. By the end of the night they had moved to 37 medals.
In the pool they added to their medals tally with Ryan Coetzee, Kaylene Corbett, Alaric Basson, Erin Gallagher, and the mixed 4x100m freestyle team taking gold and Christin Mundell (2), Erin Gallagher, Alard Basson and the men’s 4x200m freestyle bagging silver.
Women’s 100m butterfly, heats: Erin Gallagher won her heat in 1min 01.13sec to qualify second fastest for the final by 0.02 of a second. Emma Chelius finished second in her heat in 1:03.46 to qualify for the final fifth fastest.
Men’s 100m butterfly, heats: Alard Basson finished second in his heat in 54.57 to qualify joint-third fastest for the final. Ryan Coetzee won his heat in 54.77 to qualify fifth fastest.
Men’s 200m breaststroke, heats: Alaric Basson won his heat in 2:15.31 to qualify fastest for the final by a full two seconds. Ayrton Sweeney (2:20.41) finished fourth in his heat and qualified eighth fastest.
Women’s 50m backstroke, heats: Kerryn Herbst finished second in her heat in 29.77 to qualify fourth fastest for the final, while Erin Gallagher won her heat in 29.94 to qualify fifth fastest.
Men’s 50m backstroke, heats: Martin Binedell finished second in his heat in 27.20, with Neil Fair placed third after touching in 27.22. That placed them seventh and eight fastest for the final.
Mixed 4x100m freestyle relay, heats: Team SA touched off Egypt to win their heat in 3:43.99 and qualify fastest for the final.
Women’s 400m freestyle: Christin Mundell lost out narrowly to Egypt’s Hania Moro who won in 4:21.36, with Mundell taking her fourth individual silver in 4:22.95. Jessica Whelan led up to the 250m mark but faded to finish fourth in 4:26.20.
Men’s 400m freestyle: Brent Szurdoki finished fifth in 3:56.76 and Roberto Gomes placed sixth in 3:58.84.
Women’s 100m butterfly: Erin Gallagher won the silver medal in 59.34 and Emma Chelius finished fourth in 1:01.90.
Men’s 100m butterfly: Ryan Coetzee took the gold medal in 53.70 after leading all the way and holding off teammate Alard Basson in 53.88.
Women’s 200m breaststroke: Kaylene Corbett picked up her third gold of the Games when easily winning in 2:29.23 with Christin Mullen picking up her fifth individual silver in 2:35.39.
Men’s 200m breaststroke: Alaric Basson won in 2:14.21 for his second individual gold in a new Games record. Ayton Sweeney finished fourth in 2:17.73.
Women’s 50m backstroke: Erin Gallagher won her second individual gold of the Games taking the women’s 50m backstroke in 29.05, with Kerryn Herbst fourth in 29.65.
Men’s 50m backstroke: Martin Bindell finished fourth in 26.64 and Neil Fair touched eighth in 27.12.
Mixed 4x100m freestyle: Team SA (Erasmus, Coetzee, Chelius, Gallagher) won the gold medal in 3:31.24 to beat Egypt by three seconds and break the African record in the process. That made it five golds and four silvers on the night.
Men’s 4x200m freestyle: Team SA (Binedell, Szurdoki, Alard Basson, Alaric Basson) finished second in 7:35.13. That made it 10 medals from the pool on the night (five gold, five silver) to take Team SA’s overall total to 37.
Mixed Teams, Group Stage C: Team SA won all five matches 2-0 against Eritrea for a 5-0 whitewash.
Women’s team event: Team SA’s women won their playoff for ninth and 10th position by beating Congo 3-0 (3-2, 3-0, 3-0). The team was Danisha Patel, Thabistile Mtshoelibe and Simeen Mookrey.
Men’s team event: Team SA’s men lost their playoff for 13th and 14th position when going down 2-3 to Mauritius (0-3, 0-3, 3-0, 2-3, 2-3). The team was Byrone Abrahams, Chetan Nathoo and Kurt Lingeveldt.
Men’s Group A: South Africa U20 lost 4-0 to Burkina Faso U20.
