Team SA continued on their winning ways in the men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball events at the Africa Para Games in Accra, Ghana, on Thursday.
The women won 34-16 over Morocco and the men followed up with a 54-26 victory over Angola, after leading 27-9 at half-time.
South Africa were going for their third win a row and looking to stay unbeaten, while Morocco had los their first two matches, before rebounding with a 23-12 victory over Ghana. South Africa had beaten the hosts 51-31, so as a formline between the results, looked to have the edge heading into his game.
Yet it was not going to be an easy tsk as so it proved as Morocco stayed in the contest for long periods. South Africa had got themselves in front in a low-scoring encounter and held a six-point lead (18-12) at the half-time interval. In the context of the match that was significant as they outscored Morocco 6-4 in the third period, to head into the final 10 minutes of the match with a 26-16 advantage.
The first points of the final quarter came after 1min 40sec and it fell to Team SA who stretched their lead to 28-16. They then took advantage of a miss by Morocco to punish their opponents and it was 30-16.
South Africa continued to get stronger in the final minutes and they extended their advantage to 34-16 and were out of sight on the scoreboard.
On Friday South Africa’s women come up against Kenya and will be looking to maintain their perfect 100% win record from four games, having already beaten Zambia, Ghana and Morocco.
