Top fighters in Vanderijlpark

By Mark Etheridge

The Portuguese Hall in Vanderbijlpark will reverberate to the thud of the continent’s canniest fighters over the next week.

That’s because the venue hosts not one, but two big judo tournaments in the space of a week.

First up is the Africa Zone 6 championships. Starting on Saturday 25 September this event will feature athletes in the under-20 and senior divisions (both men and women) and South Africa will compete against six of their continental counterparts.

Visiting SA will be Angola, Botswana, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Next up are the South African Open Championships at the same venue and they’ll stretch from Monday until Saturday with roughly 900 athletes taking part from Under-11 to Masters.

Five visiting African countries will be taking part: Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Swaziland and Zimbabwe as well as two international visitors in the shape of Germany and New Zealand.
