Anderson builds for 2011

Our top-ranked singles tennis player’s competitive year has come to an end but already plans are afoot for next year, writes Mark Etheridge.

Kevin Anderson ends his competitive year, slotting comfortably in 62nd spot on the ATP rankings. An excellent year in hindsight, as he started 2010 in 161st position.

Picked for South Africa’s Davis Cup clash against Germany in Stuttgart earlier this year after not being available for a period, Anderson picked up a toe injury and was unable to play.

It was also the toe that put an end to his 2010 year on the courts. Said Anderson this week: “I needed small elective surgery on my toe two weeks ago and decided to get it done now so I can have a good off season and be prepared for the beginning of the year so I will start in Australia in 2011.”

Anderson has been in Chicago for the last two weeks since ending his calendar in Asia. “I just took some time off to let the foot rest up after the year.”

It wasn’t all rest for Anderson though. He still had time to pop an important question. “I got engaged two Sunday’s ago in Chicago when I put the question to my girlfriend Kelsey O’Neal, who I met at university four and a bit years ago.”

For now though Anderson can enjoy some good South African hospitality. “We’re heading back now. Kelsey is coming as well. We’re really looking forward to it. It’s her first time and my first time back since Feb, 2009.”

It seems November is a good month for SA’s top sportsmen and women in the romantic stakes. World Under-23 mountain bike champion Burry Stander popped the question to fellow cyclist Cherise Taylor in Bloemfontein.

“I had a race in Bloemfontein the day after my birthday so he booked a five-star hotel with all the romantic stuff and he asked me there… was so cute and romantic,” said Taylor.
