The University of the Western Cape (UWC) romped to yet another Varsity Beach Volleyball title when they beat Tuks 44-25 in the final.
UWC finished the tournament unbeaten on their home turf, claiming their third title on the bounce.
Led by veteran captain Bejancke Della, who was named Steers most Valuable Player of the tournament, UWC were dominant all throughout the tournament. After crushing the University of Limpopo 40-27 in the semi-final, UWC strolled to a big win over Tuks in the final.
The defending champions took the match by the scruff off the neck from the get go, but Tuks never rested on their laurels and continued to pounce, managing to take the deficit to just three before the stroke of half time.
Tuks rallied to stay in contention, but UWC’s experience soon became apparent as they cruised to a 23-14 lead at half-time. After the break, the hosts took full control and raced to a commanding position of 35-20 with just five minutes remaining.
The result was soon put to bed as UWC turned the screws even tighter and extended their lead to 19 points with one minute to go. The crowd counted down the final 10 seconds of the match as UWC claimed the match 44-25 to be crowned champions of 2015.
Tuks finished runners up while Vaal University of Technology took third place after beating the University of Limpopo 47-26 in the third place play off. UCT and newcomers Kovsies ended fifth and sixth respectively, with UCT taking one win from five and Kovsies taking the wooden spoon, finishing without a single point.
