Cameron van der Burgh, the 22-year-old breaststroke swimmer, has been given the honour of carrying the South African flag at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony here on Sunday, it was announced by SASCOC.
Van der Burgh is the current holder of three world records ÔÇô in the 50m breaststroke in both short-course and long course, and 100m long course ÔÇô and is widely fancied to win gold here at the Commonwealth Games as well.
In announcing the decision, the SASCOC CEO, Tubby Reddy, said: ÔÇ£Carrying one’s country’s flag at an opening ceremony at an event as prestigious as this is a huge honour. However, Cameron has fully deserved this. He is hard-working, a good ambassador for our country and he is one of our elite athletes from whom we have great expectations.ÔÇØ
