Caster wins again

By Mark Etheridge

Caster Semenya’s comeback continued to gather momentum as she notched up a third consecutive victory in Berlin, Germany on Sunday.

Semenya, the world 800-metre champion on the same Olympic Stadium track last year, has had close to a year on the sidelines after being the subject of gender scrutiny.

On Sunday she surged to victory in the final stages of the ISTAF meeting to win in 1min 59.90sec. This after Ukrainean pacemaker Tamara Tverdostup had taken the field through the first lap in 400m.

Since being cleared by track and field’s governing body to compete again on July 6, Semenya has competed in, and won, two low-key Finnish meetings.

But this is the first time since her epic 1:55.45 world championship win a year ago that she had dipped under 2min.

Runner-up on Sunday was Kenyan Cherono Koech who clocked a personal best of 2:00.40 while Elisa Cusma Piccione of Italy was third in 2:00.44.
