World champ lines up

This year’s Contego Wines2Whales cycle race will boast a world champion when the event gets underway in Somerset West on Friday.

That’s because four-time XTerra World Champion Conrad Stoltz will be part of the line-up for the three-day event, just two weeks after claiming the title in Hawaii.

Forming part of the ‘Ride with the Champs’ initiative, Stoltz will replace Pasella Presenter Dieter Voigt, who recently had to withdraw due to injury.

“This will literally be my first time back on the bike since Hawaii.┬áI am planning to take part in a few local mountain biking events shortly and will use the Wines2Whales race as a means to get back in form. I’ve heard that the route has great technical sections (I am really looking forward to these) and amazing scenic sections. I’m really happy to be back home and look forward to racing with my partner, Noel Wright,ÔÇØ says Stoltz.

According to Stoltz, up until now his only association with the charity was through fellow world champions, Christoph Sauser and Burry Stander.┬á ÔÇ£I am really happy to finally be given an opportunity to do something in support of this awesome charity.

The race between Somerset West and Hermanus will see Stoltz joined by top athletes such as Sauser (Olympic medallist), Stander (Under-23 World MTB champion) and Dan Hugo (South African multi-sport champion and top ranked international Xterra athlete) take part in support of the ÔÇ£Ride with the ChampionsÔÇØ initiative.

This initiative gave riders the opportunity to bid to compete with one of these four stars.  Proceeds of the auction go towards three very worthy charities, namely the JAG Foundation (an organisation focusing on education and sport development at grassroots), (a charity focusing on bringing sport to the Kayamandi township of Stellenbosch) and local community programmes en-route.
