Team SA were in action in two sports on Saturday at the World Games in Birmingham, Alabama.
Team SA chef de mission Kim Pople said the temperatures soared on day two. “It is brutally hot here in Alabama! The mercury read in the high 30s (deg C) but it felt like the high 40s given there’s so many trees and concrete around the various facilities. We had representation in two sports on Saturday – and it was fascinating to watch.
“Most of us haven’t been exposed to athletes jumping out of helicopters and Chris Teague performed really well. Our tenpin bowlers were involved in tight battles and it came down to one pin here and one pin there in some cases. Our archers are about to start their journey home, but canoeists Bridgitte Hartley and Andy Birkett have joined the squad ahead of their competition early in the week.
“Gymnast Shannon Gardiner is also here and practised, so we’re all hyped for day three of overall competition. The southern hospitality is great and everyone is fit, well and raring to go within Team SA,” Pople added.
