Simmonds continues to shine at Stellenbosch

There’s simply no stopping Chanel Simmonds’ dominance at the Digicall Futures 2 tennis tournament being played at the Stellenbosch University.

While the other women in the draw are spending up to two hours on court – top seeded Simmonds rarely plays longer than an hour.

In Friday’s quarter-final, she needed just over an hour to beat qualifier, Emilie Lindh Gallagher of Great Britain 6-1 6-1.

South Africa’s Fed Cup player, Simmonds’ semi-final round sees her locking horns with Lou Adler of France.

American qualifier, Salma Ewing caused the biggest upset of the day when she beat second seed, Anastasia Pribylova of Russia.

Pribylova looked very comfortable and was leading in the second set, but then Ewing decided that the match was far from over and after more than three hours of play, won the match 2-6 7-6  6-4.

She now faces Nina Stadler of Switzerland in the semi-final battle.

The first men’s semi-final will be a repeat of last week’s final when South Africa’s Davis Cup player, Nik Scholtz faces Frenchman Leny Mitjana.

Scholtz booked his place in the final four with another consistent performance in his victory over compatriot, Tucker Vorster by 6-4 7-6(4). Mitjana eliminated Poland’s Pawel Cais in two sets, 7-5 7-6(4).

The second semi-final is between two Zimbabwean players Takanyi Garanganga and Benjamin Lock.
