On a scorcher of a day at the Digicall Futures 3 tennis tournament in Stellenbosch only one match reached three sets as the temperature reached the high 30 degrees Celsius mark.
All matches are played at the Coetzenburg courts of the Stellenbosch University. Top seeds Nik Scholtz and Chanel Simmonds – both from South Africa – had little trouble advancing to the quarter-finals.
Scholtz won his match against the unseeded Javier Pulgar-Garcia from Spain 6-4 6-3.
He’ll now face Javier’s brother Jaime in the next round.
Simmonds played in the heat of the day against American Joelle Kissell and wasted no time at all in the heat to win 6-1 6-1.
Last week’s Futures 2 champion Salma Ewing was clearly tired from her efforts and France’s Camille Sireix used that to her advantage to win 6-3 6-2.
