Film maker and Olympian Phyllis Ellis, in collaboration with the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the South African Women and Sports Foundation (SAWASF), held a hybrid screening for athletes, coaches, and administrators in sports on 8 March 2023.

The aim of the film Category: Woman was to educate and raise awareness among attendees about the injustices that have been imposed on women in sports, especially women of colour like Annet Negesa from Uganda, Dutee Chand from India, Caster Semenya from South Africa, Evangeline Makena, Margaret Wambui, and others who were classified as women with Differences of Sex Development (DSD) and faced discrimination.

The film showcased the different processes that these athletes had to undergo to prove that they are women and should be treated as such.

During the meeting, Annet Negesa explained how the decisions made by organisations like the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) had implications for her as an athlete even to this day.

Payoshni Mitra, an athlete’s rights activist and staunch campaigner against women’s sex testing policies, was also in attendance. She emphasised the importance of activism and allyship, and more importantly, the importance of empowering athletes with knowledge of their rights.

The informative session allowed athletes, coaches, and sports administrators to share their thoughts on how they felt after watching the film and how they will be impacted moving forward.
