Happy International Women's Day 2024!

As we commemorate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2024, we extend warm regards on behalf of the South African Sports Confederation, Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

This year’s theme, ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,’ encapsulates the essence of our collective mission—to empower, support, and amplify the voices and achievements of women in sports. As the macro body of sports in South Africa, we recognise the pivotal role women play in shaping the landscape of sport, both nationally and globally.

Today, we celebrate the remarkable strides women have made in sports, acknowledging their resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to excellence. Yet, even as we celebrate these achievements, we remain cognisant of the challenges and barriers that continue to hinder the full participation and representation of women in sports.

Our commitment to fostering inclusivity and equality within the sporting community is unwavering. We stand firm in our resolve to break down systemic barriers and create pathways for equal opportunities, regardless of gender.

Currently, our team is participating at the Accra 2024 African Games, and Team South Africa has a 50-50 split between male and female athletes’ participation. For the first time, women are included in cricket at the African Games. Thus far, our women’s team has achieved a medal in the team event in table tennis, and likewise, our female karate athlete has also secured a medal. We are looking forward to more medals from our athletes.

As we prepare for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, it brings us immense pride to know that the sports programme for Paris is more gender balanced, with 28 out of 32 sports achieving full gender parity. We also hope that our South African team will achieve significant progress towards gender parity. The equal representation of male and female athletes underscores the sporting sector’s commitment to fairness and equity, setting a powerful precedent for future generations.

As we reflect on the journey ahead, let us reaffirm our dedication to championing the rights and opportunities of women in sports. Together, let us harness the transformative power of sport to inspire change, foster inclusivity, and accelerate progress towards a more equitable and inclusive future for all.

Happy International Women’s Day!
