Lloyd Harris’ run at the Australian Open came to an end in the third round at Melbourne on Saturday. The world No91 lost in straight sets to the American wildcard Mackenzie McDonald.
The score was 7-6 (9-7), 6-1, 6-4 and ended in 2hr 1min when Harris made a forehand error on what was the last point to hand McDonald the win.
Harris hit nine aces to his opponent’s 12 during the match but struggled with his first serve as he was only able to win 68 percent of points with it, compared to the American’s 81 percent.
Harris had come through a tough five-setter against Australian wild card Alex Popyrin in Melbourne in the second round.
It’s was the first time that Harris has reached the third round at a Grand Slam.
McDonald had caused an upset when he beat 22nd seed Croatian Borna Coric in four sets in the second round.
Later, Harris and his Austrian partner Julian Knowle were beaten in the first round of the men’s doubles by their Australian wildcard opponents, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios 6-2, 6-4.
