Lara Markthaler took to the snow in freezing -10deg C conditions on day two of her alpine skiing schedule at the Youth Winter Olympics in Gangwon, South Korea.
On Sunday the 16-year-old South African, the only representative of Team SA at these Games, had made her competition debut, finishing a creditable 33rd in the Women’s Super-G event at the Jeongseon High1 ski resort.
On Monday it was the Women’s Alpine Combined Slalom, where gold went to Austria’s 17-year-old Maja Waroschitz. Silver went the way of Giorgia Collomb of Italy, while Germany’s Romy Ertl took bronze.
This time Markthaler was unable to finish the course, one of 14 young Olympians who registered a “DNF” next to their names.
The gold medallist, Waroschitz (pictured), said: “In Super G I think the slope was much better than yesterday because it was really icy and much harder so it wasn’t that hard for me with a higher bib to do a good run. But in the slalom it was very hard, it was very soft and there were many bumps.”
