Proteas eye Zim after thumping Thistles

The SPAR Proteas secured a commanding 61-42 victory over Scotland in their first match of the SPAR Diamond Challenge on Tuesday.

Dominant performances across the first three quarters propelled the SPAR Proteas to an unassailable lead despite the Scots’ fightback in the last quarter.

The victory was the Proteas’ 11th over the Scotland, keeping their unbeaten record against the Thistles intact.

Proteas head coach, Norma Plummer, on her return to the coaching scene selected a strong lineup with Lenize Potgieter, returning to the SPAR Proteas setup for the first time in two years, pairing up with Elmere van der Berg upfront.

But the best individual performance did not come from the front, but rather in the form of goalkeeper Phumza Maweni who picked up the player of the match accolade for her defensive efforts.

In the day’s other match, Zimbabwe Gems took on the invitational side President’s XII in a tightly contested affair, but Zimbabwe fell short as they stumbled to a 55 – 50 defeat.

The SPAR Proteas’ next match is against Zimbabwe at 2:00pm on Wednesday and will be broadcasted live on SuperSport.
