SA at the U20 Worlds: All the results, medals

The cream of South Africa’s junior athletes was on full display in Eugene, Oregon (USA), for the World Athletics Under-20 Championships. They won eight medals – one gold, three silver and four bronze.

Here’s a summary of how South Africa fared.

MEN

100m: Marko Ferreira reached the final where he finished 3rd in 10.16. Mukona Manavhela reached the semi-finals, where he ran a 10.38.

200m: Mukona Manavhela reached the semi-finals, where he ran a 20.89. Caylon Ryan was eliminated in the 1st round with a time of 21.16.

400m: Leenert Koekemoer reached the final where he finished 3rd in 44.96. Kryn Romijn placed 7th in 46.16.

800m: Werner Gouws reached the semi-finals where he ran 1:48.89. Emile Els also reached the semi-finals where he ran 1:51.02.

1500m: Tiisetseo Malungane had a first round time of 3:45.64 and then finished 9th in the final in 3:42.98. Bertus van der Linde was eliminated in the 1st round with a time of 3:57.02.

5000m: Njabulo Hlatswayo finished 15th in the final in 14:13.90.

110mH: Phengo Miyen reached the final where he placed 8th in 13.26. He’s run 13.18 in the semi-finals. Jayden Parkin was eliminated in the 1st round with a time of 20.31.

400mH: Lesibe Dikgale and Matodzi Ndou both won their heats in 50.58 and 50.69, respectively. Dikgale was 2nd in his semi-final in 50.50 and Ndou was 2nd in his semi-final in 49.66. In the final Ndou took bronze in 49.90.

3000m Steeplechase: Siyabonga Mbeleki was eliminated in the heats with a time of 9:18.06.

High jump: Kenneth Phooko was eliminated in qualification with a height of 2.05m, while Matao le Roux recorded a no measure.

Long jump: Tshiamo Motsamai recorded a no measure in qualification. Levi Luke Fuck was eliminated in qualification with a distance of 7.41m.

Shot put: Jaco van Dyk picked up bronze with a 19.80m distance in the final. Dewald Bezuidenhoit was eliminated in qualifying with a distance of 18.38m.

Discus: Joshua Gerber had a distance of 61.19m in qualification. In the final he threw 61.43m for 9th place.

Javelin: Jan-Hendrik Heymans won the gold medal with a distance of 80.50m. Silver was taken with a distance of 74.09m. Marques Olivier was 7th in the final with a distance of 70.94m.

Decathlon: Daniel Von Der Heyden was 6th in the final with 7696 points.

4x100m: Zattu Hlongwane, Mukona Manavjela, Caylon Ryan and Marko Ferreira were 2nd in their heat in 39.86. In the final, Phenyo Miyen, Zattu Hlongwane, Caylon Ryan and Marko Ferreira were 6th in 39.48.

4x400m: Ryno Riekert, Kryn Romjin, Abelines Schooeman and Leendet Koekemoer were 2nd in their heat in 3:05.08. In the final, the same quartet won silver in 3:02.76.

WOMEN

100m: Rume Burger reached the semi-finals where she ran 11.53 after a 11.56 in the heats. Faith Konde was eliminated in the heats with a time of 11.85.

200m: Rume Burger reached the final where she finished 8th in 23.89. She’d run 23.18 in the semi-finals after winning her heat in 23.17. Sarah Reed was eliminated in the heats with a time of 24.38.

400m: Davida Strong ran 53.37 in the semi-finals after timing 53.26 in the first round. Christi Loggenberg was eliminated in the first round with a time of 54.83. 

800m: Carise van Rooyen reached the semi-finals where she had a time of 2:04.94. Andrea Steynberg was eliminated in the heats with a time of  2:13.29.

1500m: Lara Stander was eliminated in the heats with a time of 4:21.67. Andrea Steynberg was eliminated in the first round with a time of 4:26.33.

100mH: Tumi Ramokgopa won the silver medal with a time of 12.96. She had won her semi-final in 13.02. Megan Nieman reached the semi-final where she ran 13.65.

400mH: Tumi Ramokgopa was 2nd in her heat in 58.32 and then won her semi-final in 56.80. Megan Nieman was 2nd in her heat in 58.65 and then ran 57.56 in the semi-finals. In the final Ramokgopa won silver in 55.88.

Long jump: Ashlynn Norman was 10th in the final with a distance of 5.96m. Oluchi Abelwe Ndubueze was eliminated in qualification with a distance of 5.76m.

High jump: Michaela Sprocter was eliminated in qualification with a height of 1.76m.

Shot put: Johannes Lamprecht was eliminated in qualification with a distance of 15.04m. Fortune Cletus-Okolo was eliminated in qualification with a distance of 13.68m.

Discus: Mila Ueckermann was eliminated in qualification with a distance of 50.50m. Chris-Mari Nel was eliminated in qualification with a distance of 50.98m. 

Javelin: Marine Grobler was 4th in her semi-final with a distance of 51.59m. Stephane Hook was 4th in her semi-final with a distance of 49.23m. In the final Grobler was 6th with a distance of 51.43m and Hook 8th with 49.45m.

Pole vault: Ansume de Beer did not start. 

4x100m: Faith Konde, Ashlynn Norman, Sarah Reed and Chrystabel Davis finished 8th in their heat in 45.96.

4x400m: Davida Strong, Christi Loggenberg, Zante van der Merwe and Isabelle Gunter finished 4th in their heat in 3.36.92.

MIXED

4x100m heats: Zattu Hlongwane, Zoe Cilliers, Marlon Kayster, Chrystable Davis were 5th in their heat in 42.87.

4x400m final: Ryno Riekert, Davida Strong, Abelines Schoeman and Isabelle Gunter were 6th in the final in 3:21.48.
