SA wins Universal Trench Individual World Championship and Team World Championship

South Africa starred individually and as a team at the FITASC Universal Trench World Championship 2023.

The World Championship in Universal Trench consists of 200 clay targets shot over four days, shooting 50 targets per day. This is a test of not just Clay Target Shooting skills but also a really tough test of one’s mental strength. One has to sleep on one’s score for three nights and maintain a strong mental focus.

LUCA PEACOCK,
2023 FITASC UNIVERSAL TRENCH
WORLD CHAMPION

Luca Peacock who lives in the Western Cape, South Africa, (aged 21) shot 50 – 49 – 50 – 49 to finish on a score of 198 ex 200 on Sunday, 6th August 2023. It was a nailbiting 5 hour wait to find out if the Spaniard Jose Javier Azpeitia Beristain would equal his score, which he did! This resulted in a thrilling shoot off where both competitors had to shoot a full round of 25 targets to try and break the tie. Both competitors shot 24 ex 25, and went on to shoot single targets until the tie was broken. The result was a zero for the Spaniard and one for South Africa! The final score therefore was:

Luca Peacock – 198 ex 200 + 24 + 1
Jose Javier Azpeitia Beristain – 198 ex 200 + 24 + 0

Luca has been shooting for 7 years and this year was his first year shooting as a senior and not a junior. Luca’s awesome achievement in Universal Trench bodes well for the future of Olympic Trap in South Africa!

SOUTH AFRICAN MAN TEAM MEMBERS :
DANIEL GROBBELAAR, LUCA PEACOCK, WALDO FREESE
(CTSASA President, Orazio Cremona in foreground)

The South African National Protea Team beat a field of seven international teams – including Australia (who they beat by just two targets!), Italy and Great Britain, all of whom are long-standing World Champions in Universal Trench – and won the Team Gold Medal for the second time in our history of shooting Universal Trench!

The scores were:

Ex 200 targets

Luca Peacock                       198

Daniel Grobbelaar             187

Waldo Freese                       193

Total team score:                    578  ex 600 targets

It is hard to describe the strength of mind it requires to shoot the last round, knowing that if just one or two targets are lost that the Team Gold title might also be lost.

Olympic trap
We are currently training preparing a number of Olympic athletes for the Olympic Games in 2024 and 2028, plus the next Commonwealth Games in 2026. Recent achievements by Willie Steyn, D’Arcy van der Berg and Neels Bornman are showing fantastic promise. Willie Steyn is now a Senior shooter whose accomplishments include winning the FITASC Universal Trench Junior World Championship in 2019. D’Arcy van der Berg was a member of the winning Man Team for FITASC Universal Trench also in 2019.

ATA trap
In addition to world championships in Universal Trench and Olympic Trap, there are also many others, including the ATA Trapshooting World Championship in the USA, also known as the Grand American. We currently have several athletes shooting in this magnificent event and already a number of excellent scores have been shot by our South African Proteas and competitors. One of our lady competitors, Calista Vermaak, has shot a personal best of 100 ex 100 targets in one of the preliminary championships. This is a superb score! ATA Trap is a discipline which many Clay Target Shooters perfect before moving on to the more challenging disciplines of Olympic Trap and Universal Trench.
