Team SA’s athletes were involved in five sports on Sunday at The World Games in Chengdu, China. In men’s long distance K1 canoeing, Hamish Lovemore added another silver to his silver won on Saturday from the short distance event when he again pushed Denmark’s Mads Pedersen all the way to the finish in the Long Distance final. There was also muaythai, squash, billiards and orienteering involvement.

SILVER! Men’s K1 Long Distance (21km), final: Hamish Lovemore earned a second silver of The Games when he pushed Mads Pedersen all the way to the finish, in a time of 1:35:39, which was 11 seconds behind the gold medallist
Women’s K1 Long Distance (21km), final: Saskia Hockly finished in 9th position in 1hr 54min 18sec, with Sweden’s Melina Andersson taking gold in 1:48:11. Hockly was prominent at halfway, being only 3 seconds off the medals, but she fell back in the second half of the race

Men’s -86kg, 3rd and 4th place: Damian Collins lost to Chengcheng Zhang of China 1st round

Women’s Sprint Final: Sarah Wimberley finished 36th overall, with gold going to Simona Aebersold of Switzerland

This is the ninth The World Games attended by Team SA, with the first being in 1993 in The Hague, Netherlands. Across those eight previous Games, Team SA has won 20 medals, with the most (six) at the 1997 The World Games in Lahti, Finland.
