Anderson loses out to veteran Haas in opening round

It certainly wouldn’t have been what top-ranked Kevin Anderson was looking for as the South African went out in the first round of the Cincinnnati Masters in the US on Monday, writes Mark Etheridge.

Anderson went into the tournament as only the sixth South African to break into the ATP Top 20 rankings when the latest list was released on Monday morning.

But two sets later it was back to the grindstone as he went out to Germany’s Tommy Haas. It was a straight-sets defeat, 6-4 6-4 as the veteran 35-year-old broke Anderson once in each set to seal the win.

That was despite Anderson winning the ace battle 7-4 and also having a slightly better first-service percentage.

The 11th-seeded Haas now takes on Spaniard Marcel Granollers in the next round.

He has now won 38 times this season and if, as expected, he goes on to win for a 40th time it will be the first time he’s managed to do so in a┬á season since 2006.
