Banyana in Upington

Banyana Banyana fever is running high in Upington, Northern Cape as the senior national women’s team prepare to take on Namibia in an international friendly fixture at the Danie Kuys stadium on Saturday. Due to the sweltering heat experienced in Upington at this time of the year, the match is set for a 5pm kick-off.

The match was moved to Upington from its original venue of Kimberley, with the Northern Cape Provincial Government’s Department of Sport, Arts and Culture pledging their support to allow top quality football to be experienced in other areas of the province after Kimberley played host to last year’s “50 days before the 2010 FIFA World Cup” festivities.

The fixture forms part of Banyana Banyana’s build-up towards hosting Tunisia in an important Olympic Qualifier in Durban on April 2, before they play the return leg against the North African side in Tunisia on April 17.

The stadium gates will open at 1pm on match day, with entrance free of charge to fans in possession of match tickets obtainable in Upington from Thursday.

The day’s programme will include the Northern Cape leg of the Sasol League Road Show with Banyana Banyana coaches conducting a coaches workshop from noon till 1pm with the coaches from the Sasol League clubs in the province, before top talent in the Northern Cape takes to the field when the Northern Cape Invitation A stream line up takes on the Northern Cape Invitation B stream line up at 2pm.

From this match, the Banyana Banyana coaches will look to identify talent to increase the pool of players available for possible future call-ups to national camps.
