Johannesburg:  It is with great shock and infinite sadness that Basketball South Africa learnt about the untimely passing of a colleague, friend and National Executive Council Member, Ms Lungile Mposula on Saturday evening, 19 September 2015.

Ms Lungile, aged 35 years, passed away after a short illness, during which time she was hospitalised

Basketball SA wishes to convey our sincere condolences to the family of Ms Mposula, and in particular, her son , Sibonelo, her father Mr Phillip Mposula and her two brothers. During this sad time of bereavement, the entire basketball family are keeping you in our prayers and trust that God, in His infinite mercy will keep a guiding watch over you.

“We are totally shocked by the sad news of the passing of Lungile,” said Basketball SA President Graham Abrahams.

“We were aware of her illness as she recently took ill on her way to an NEC meeting but we always believed that she was on her way to recovery. Lungile will be greatly missed not only for the sterling work that she did in basketball but also as a friend who took time out to engage with her colleagues. She had an immense passion for youth basketball and as such, was responsible for schools basketball on the NEC. We wish to convey our condolences to her family and loved ones and want to assure them of our support and prayers during this time of loss,” said Abrahams.

Basketball SA Acting Secretary-General, Tsepo Nyewe was stunned when he heard the news of the passing of Lungile.

“I tried calling her as recently as Thursday but could not reach her,” said Nyewe.

“She would really have wanted to be part of the send-off of the Women’s National Team who is leaving this evening (Saturday) for Cameroon to take part in Afrobasket 2015 but her illness prevented her from doing so. Lungile was a special person and I have worked with her in basketball over many years. She offered her services in various tournaments and her absence will leave a huge vacuum in our lives,” said Nyewe.

“The women’s team is dedicating their participation in the Afrobasket competition to Lungile.”

Ms Lungile was responsible on the NEC for youth and women’s basketball. She has been part of the Top Schools Championships since its inception. She has also successfully  completed a sports executive management programme at Wits Business School, skills that she applied in her work in basketball.

Funeral arrangements will be made public soon.
