Our top-ranked singles player, Chani Scheepers’ French campaign came to an end on Thursday, writes Mark Etheridge.
The 61st ranked player went down in the quarter-finals of the Strasbourg International.
She lost to the host nation’s Alize Cornet, going down in straight sets to the world’s 31st ranked player.
In a rain-interrupted match lasting 69 minutes, third-seeded Cornet came up trumps 6-3 6-1 to reach the semi-final.
It was a game that featured not a single ace, but Scheepers had four double faults against her name to Cornet’s one.
She had the better first service percentage (70% compared to 55%) but her second service let her down and she was only able to win 18% of points in that regard.
Next up on the calendar is the French Open which starts on Sunday.
