Hartley home and happy

By Mark Etheridge

Champion canoeist Bridgitte Hartley is revelling in her brief but triumphant homecoming after success on the European World Cup circuit.

“It’s really wonderful to be home and share all my experiences and results with all my family and friends! My mom gave me a huge bunch of roses, I feel so special,” Hartley told Road to London, 2012.

But she wasn’t at home in Richards Bay for long and soon headed off to Pretoria.

“I then had to repack all my stuff to relocate to Pretoria for training and studying. But what a lovely surprise to have such great accomodation waiting for me at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria.

“I am very grateful to SASCOC and HPC for arranging this for me for my short stay of two weeks in SA until I start my training camp for worlds in Hungary on 1 July.

“The HPC is a great environment for a sportsperson and I am very comfortable here. I can now focus on studying and training until my next race at the end of June. I’ll take part in the SA marathon selection trial in Plettenberg Bay on 27 and 28 June and I will race K1 and K2 with my partner from Beijing last year, Michele Eray.”

Hartley won gold in the showcase K1 500-metre final at the final World Cup event of the season, in Szeged, Hungary last week and also medalled at the other two World Cup events.
