The last of our three fighters crashed out of the AIBA women’s World Boxing Championships in Qinhuangdao, China on Monday, writes Mark Etheridge.
The competition doubles up as an Olympic qualifying event and none of our boxers will be making their way to London later this year. The championships were the seventh staging of the event and attracted close on 350 fighters contesting the 10 titles on offer.
On Saturday Thobile Khumalo (lightweight, 60kg) and Anna du Plessis (flyweight, 51kgkg) lost their preliminary bouts.
Then on Sunday Claudia Heijns went down to Taiwan’s Dara Flora Shen. That fight was in the middleweight division (75kg) and Shen won 25-9.
She won the first round 9-4, completely dominated the second at 8-1 and took the third and final round 8-4.
