Juniors go down again

Our Under-21 side suffered their second consecutive 5-0 win at the BDO Junior Women’s World Cup in Boston, US, going down to China in their first Pool F match-up.

In their previous match, the South Africans went down 5-0 to Argentine.

The match began with China quick on the attack and taking control. It wasn’t long before they scored, in the 15th minute through Jiahui Liao off a penalty corner.

The Chinese continued to dominate the match and received many penalty corner opportunities throughout the first half. Unable to convert these penalty corners or score off a field goal, the first half ended with China still up 1-0.

But it wasn’t long before they increased their lead, with their first penalty corner of the second half, in the 43rd minute and Sinan Sun scored to make it 2-0.

Midway through the second half, South Africa replaced keeper Hanli Hattingh with Camille Jasson. Despite constant pressure, South Africa’s defence held strong.

China could not get on the board again until the 62nd minute through a field goal by Qiuling Zheng. A minute later it was 4-0 as Wenting Zhang scored a field goal to give China a commanding 4-0 lead.

But it wasn’t over yet and in the 67th minute, Sun had her second goal of the match to make the final score 5-0.
