Youngsters go down to Thailand at World Juniors

Our badminton side have gone down to Thailand at the World Junior Championships taking place in Malaysia, writes Mark Etheridge.

It was, as expected, a comprehensive victory for Thailand as they won 5-0.

The defeat again highlights the difference between the Far East countries and the rest of the world.

Thailand are ranked sixth in the world compared to South Africa’s 24th.

In only one game did South Africa achieve double figures and that was in the men’s doubles as Bongani von Bodenstein and Michael Jennings got double figures in their 21-10 and 21-11 defeat to Jomkoh and Thaptimdong and then when┬á Von Bodenstein teamed up with Anri Schoonees in the mixed doubles, going down 21-13 and 21-3 to Viryankgura and Chochuwong.

Said national coach and manager/coach at the 2012 Olympics, Stewart Carson: “Although we lost to Thailand, our players are getting better with every match, all of them are giving 100% which is great to see. We play Netherlands tomorrow so we will be fielding our strongest team.ÔÇØ

Tuesday sees the last of the pool games. South Africa lost to Russia in their opening game.
