Chad le Clos and Myles Brown made up for Sunday’s disappointment at not making the 50-metre butterfly and 400m freestyle finals by both qualifying for the 200m freestyle semi-finals at the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia on Monday morning.
Le Clos was first off first in the seventh of eight heats and after 100m had an 0.12sec lead over the field. By 150m that had been trimmed to 0.03sec and he slacked off in the final 50m to end fourth in 1:47.17 behind Australian Cameron McEvoy (1:46.39).
The eighth and final heat had Brown ending fifth in 1:47.48 behind winner Yang Sun of China.
Sun was the quickest of the 16 qualifiers for Monday night’s semi-final with a 1:46:00 effort.
KwaZulu-Natalians Le Clos and Brown were 12th and 15th fastest into the semi, behind Sun and there were a total of 79 swimmers in the heats.
