Mayne gets SA call-up

Western Province’s Jade Mayne is the only new cap in the South African women’s hockey squad named for the Spar Cup Four Nations tournament taking place in Durban this week.

The selectors also announced two captains in Marsha Marescia and Mariette Rix for the tournament.

‘Marsha has a lot of pressure on her shoulders as it is, and I think with the support of Rixie in that role, it will bring the best out of Marsha’s leadership,’ said Proteas coach Jenny King. ‘Spreading the responsibility will ensure a good balance. It’s an idea I’ve been toying with for a while’.

Of the 18 players in the squad 10 are from Western Province, with Southern Gauteng providing four and KZN Raiders, Northerns and North West providing one each. South Africa will play Argentina, Australia and India in the Four-Nations, which starts at Queensmead on Tuesday and ends on Saturday.

King said the tournament was an important part of South Africa’s preparations for the Champions Challenge tournament in Cape Town in October.

‘We need to be highly competitive throughout the week, and make sure that our defence is sound and sure,’ she said. ‘This will help in our preparations for the Champions Challenge in October. It’s essential to beat teams ranked lower than us (India). Obviously our aim is to win the tournament but I think a place in the final will be a very good and pleasant result.ÔÇØ

Argentina are ranked second in the world, Australia fifth, South Africa 12th and India 14th.

Like their netball counterparts, the hockey team need to do well to ensure that they are included in the South African team to play in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi next year.
