Olympic swimming hopeful Kathryn Meaklim has continued her fine form at the British Gas Olympic qualifying event in London, writes Mark Etheridge.
Four days into the event and she was still the only one of the 11-strong South African team to have swum a qualifying time. This after her 400-metre Individual Medley swim on the opening day of the competition in the Olympic pool.
Her second event was the 200m IM. “It was ok, I just missed the time,” Meaklim told Road to London 2012.
“I went 2min 13.5sec and the qualifying time is 2.13.3ÔǪ so bit disappointed as I was hoping to get it, but hopefully at nationals will be able to do it.”
The national championships where swimmers will be required to swim a qualifying time (on top of a time set in an international meeting) will be held in Durban in April.
“I’m still happy with my time as its the fastest I’ve gone in a while,” she said. “Mandy [Loots] had a really good swim in the 200 butterfly, still a bit off the time as she went 2.11 and the time is 2.08, but looking better”.
