More gold as SA trio cash in on medals in China

South African swimmers picked up yet more medals at the fifth leg of the FINA World Cup event in Beijing, China this weekend, writes Mark Etheridge.
Despite the unusual sight of Olympic gold medallist Chad le Clos being disqualified for false start in one of his events, there were still four golds for the KwaZulu-Natal swimmer over the two days of competition.
There was also gold and silver for Le Clos’ KZN, SA teammate Myles Brown got a gold and two silvers, while Olympic veteran Roland Schoeman also got into the act with a gold of his own.
Le Clos’s golden haul came in the 100-metre freestyle (46.81 seconds), 50m butterfly (22:03) and 200m butterfly (1:49.73) on the first day and then in the 50m freestyle on the final day (21.28).
That after his disqualification in the 100m butterfly for a false start.
‘It was disappointing that I missed the 100m butterfly this morning,’ Le Clos told the FINA website. ‘However, I am happy with my 21st win in the 50m freestyle. In general, I like the 200m distance the most. The sprint is just like a gamble for fun. I’m also really happy for my Myles, who picked up gold and silver tonight,” Le Clos said.
‘At the Doha Fina World Swimming Championships, I want to win three golds and be the first man to win 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly events. No one has done that before. I will try to do that for South Africa,’ Le Clos added.
Brown’s medals came in the 1500m freestyle (14:47.22) behind Hugnary’s Gergely Gyurta (14:38.27) in the 200m free, where he clocked 1:44.12 to pip current world recordholder Paul Biedermann of Germany for gold (1:44.48) and then in the 400m freestyle where he had to settle for second (3:39.26) behind Chinese Olympic champion Sun Yang.
Schoeman, one of the most prolific medal winners for South Africa over the years, was top-dog in the 50m breaststroke with a winning time of 26.87.
