Five down and two to go… Natalie du Toit’s illustrious international swimming career is slowly winding down here at the Paralympic Games in London, writes Mark Etheridge.
These Paralympics will be her final competition and she swam her last S9 50-metre freestyle event on Wednesday night. Despite only ending seventh in 29.84sec she was philosophical.
“I’m actually quite happy with this race. Going out seventh and coming in seventh is a great achievement for me. In April I was only swimming 31.5 and this time for me has been a great improvement.
“Of course I would have liked to medal but the girls are good as well.
“I still have two more races coming up which I’m confident about but we’ll just have to see.”
One of those races is Thursday’s 200m Individual Medley and in the morning heats she gave every indication that it could be another golden night for Team South Africa as she was fastest through the heats in 2min 36.92sec, a second and a half quicker than Great Britain’s Stephanie Millward.
