Double amputee Oscar Pistorius got that much closer to being part of Team South Africa at the Olympics in London later this year when he dipped under the Olympic qualifying time of 45.30 seconds at the Gauteng North Provincial Championships in Pretoria on Saturday.
Pistorius competed in the men’s 400-metre event and was timed at 45.20sec.
The 25-year-old, known as the Blade Runner, is now the first South African track and field athlete to have reached the qualifying time this year.
He still has to run the qualifying standard at an international meeting after 31 March as per Athletics South Africa’s stipulations, and also compete at the SA Senior Championships in Port Elizabeth on 13-14 April.
Pistorius competed at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, in 2011 where he was a part of the 4x400m relay team that broke the South African record and also won the silver medal.
