University Games Team SA went into the fourth day of competition at the Student Games in Germany with three medals won in the pool. Pieter Coetze took the 100m backstroke gold, Lara van Niekerk earned silver in the 50m breaststroke and the mixed 4x100m medley relay squad claimed bronze.
On Sunday the squad were in action in three sports. The results were:
DIVING
Women’s 3m springboard preliminary: , Bailey Heydra had a score of 230.30 and qualified for the final, while Grace Brammer (212.05) is first reserve. Kerry-Leigh Morrison (151.80) missed out of a place in the 12-diver final.
SWIMMING
Men’s 50m backstroke, heats: Ruard van Renen finished 2nd in his heat in 25.50 and Pieter Coetze won his heat in 24.69. Coetze qualified fastest for the semi-finals, while Van Renen was 7th fastest
Men’s 100m freestyle, heats: Ruard van Renen finished 7th in his heat in 49.71, while Pieter Coetze was 4th in his heat in 49.02. Coetze qualified for the semi-finals as 5th fastest but Van Renen (21st) missed out
Men’s 100m freestyle, semi-finals: Pieter Coetze won his heat in 48.30 and enters Monday’s final as fastest qualifier
Women’s 100m butterfly, heats: Leigh McMorran won her heat in 1:02.41 but didn’t progress to the semi-finals (last 16) as 25th fastest overall
Women’s 100m backstroke, final: Michaela de Villiers finished 7th in the final in 1:01.03
Women’s 200m breaststroke, heats: Simone Moll finished 5th in her heat in 2:30.10 and Kate Meyer was 6th in the same heat in 2:31.06. Both qualified for the semi-finals, in 8th and 15th position, respectively
Women’s 200m breaststroke, semi-finals: Simone Moll finished 4th in her semi-final in 2:29.42 and Kate Meyer was 8th in her semi in 2:31.45. Neither progressed to the final
Women’s 1500m freestyle, heats: Stephanie Houtman finished 5th in her heat in 17:03.33 and didn’t progress to the final
Women’s 4x200m freestyle, heats: Team SA (Hannah Robertson, Georgia Nel, Lise Coetzee and Hannah Pearse) finished 4th in their heat in 8:20.12 and qualified for the final as 8th fastest

Men’s 50m backstroke, semi-finals: Pieter Coetze won his semi-final in 24.50, while Ruard van Renen finished 3rd in the same race in 25.20. They qualified for Monday’s final 1st and 5th fastest, respectively
