Monday was a busy day at the World University Games in Germany with Pieter Coetze, the country’s star swimmer, winning gold in the 50m backstroke and silver in the 100m freestyle to take University Games Team SA’s medals tally to six.
Elsewhere, the track and field athletics programme got under way in Bochum.
ATHLETICS
Men’s 400m hurdles heats: Wernich van Rensburg finished 3rd in his heat in 51.35 and qualified 16th fastest for the semi-finals
Men’s 100m, heats: Bayanda Walaza won his heat in 10.27 and qualified 2nd fastest for the semi-finals while Kyle Zinn won his heat in 10.33 and was 3rd fastest overall heading into the semni-finals
Men’s discus, qualification: Aron Aranda threw a distance of 55.41m and qualified for the final in 10th position
Women’s 100m heats: Gabriella Marais won her heat in 11.38 and qualified for the semi-finals as 6th fastest. Joviale Mbisha finished 3rd in her heat in 11.84 and qualified 19th for the semi-finals.
Women’s 400m heats: Previous Molepo finished 3rd in her heat in 53.48 and Marklie Viljoen won her heat, also in 53.48. Both qualified for the semi-finals, Molepo given 10th and Viljoen 11th on the lists
Women’s shot put, qualification: Collete Uys recorded a distance of 16.83m which saw her qualify for the final in 5th position
Women’s 10,000m final: Nicola Jansen finished 10th in 36:52.16 with Maria Mailula 13th in a PB 33:06.34

Men’s 1m springboard preliminary: Anathi Shozi finished 23rd and did not progress to the final
Women’s 3m springboard, final: Bailey Heydra finished 9th with total points of 223.80.

Men’s Epee table of 32: Team SA (Christiaan Bester, Harry Saner and Rahul van Manen) beat Germany 48-35
Men’s Epee table of 16: Team SA (Christiaan Bester, Harry Saner and Rahul van Manen) lost to Hungary 45-32

GOLD! Men’s 50m backstroke, final: Pieter Coetze won the gold medal in 24.49 while Ruard van Renen finished 8th in 25.36

Men’s 100m butterfly, heats: Guy Brooks finished 8th in his heat in 53.93, while Ruard van Renen was 6th in his heat in 53.27. Van Renen qualified for the semi-finals as 16th fastest, but Brooks missed out
