Team SA went into Thursday’s eighth day of competition lying fifth on the medals table at the World University Games in Germany. They started the day with 12 medals, with four golds, coming from Pieter Coetze (2), Bayanda Walaza and Lythe Pillay, all Paris Olympians. The Team SA men’s 4x400m relay squad got the medals for the day started when taking silver behind Poland, before Mondray Barnard picked up a 100m hurdles bronze. Then Aiden Smith won shot put gold and Walaza ended things with gold in the 200m.

Men’s 200m, semi-final: Bayanda Walaza won his semi-final in 20.76 while Eckhardt Potgieter was 2nd in his heat in 21.06. They both qualified for the final, Walaza 2nd fastest and Potgieter 8th fastest
GOLD! Men’s 200m, final: Bayanda Walaza won the gold medal in 20.63 while Eckhardt Potgieter placed 8th
BRONZE! Men’s 110m H final: Mondray Barnard took 3rd place in 13.59, while Jacobus le Roux finished 8th in 14.85
GOLD! Men’s shot put: Aiden Smith produced a winning distance of 20.25m
Men’s 3000m steeplechase, heats: Enoch Mokaba placed 20th overall with a time of 9:01.12 and he didn’t progress to the final
Men’s javelin, qualification: Willem Jansen threw a distance of 75.45m which placed him 2nd on the overall list heading into the final
Women’s 800m, final: Charne Swart finished 6th in 2:01.45
Women’s 400m H, final: Hannah van Niekerk finished 7th in 58.02
Women’s discus, final: Colette Uys threw 57.50m to finish 6th while Tyla Wasmuth had a best distance of 46.78m to place 11th
Women’s heptathlon (long jump): Karmen Fouche finished 6th overall with a distance of 5.89m. It left her in 8th position on the overall standings
Women’s heptathlon (javelin): Karmen Fouche placed 16th on the list of throwers with a distance of 36.10m, which left her in 8th position overall heading into the final event
Women’s heptathlon (800m): Karmen Fouche placed 8th in her race in 2:17.44. She ended the competition in 8th
Women’s 5000m, heats: Nadia Potgieter recorded a time of 17:16.95 which left her 27th overall and she didn’t progress to the final
Women’s 100m hurdles, heats: Kayla van der Bergh finished 7th in her heat in 13.67 and she was 27th overall and did not progress tom the semi-finals
Women’s 200m, semi-finals: Annestaysha George finished 5th in her semi-final in 24.41 to place 17th overall and Gabriella Marais had a 24.53 to place 20th. Neither progressed to the final
Women’s pole vault (qualification): Mire Reinstorf had a cleared height of 3.70m which placed her 20th overall and she didn’t progress to the final
Mixed 4x400m relay, heats: Team SA (Mthi Mthimkulu, NP Molepo, Wernich van Rensburg and Marlie Viljoen) won their heat in 3:19.74 which left them 3rd fastest heading into the final
SILVER! Mixed 4x400m relay, heats: Team SA (Mthi Mthimkulu, NP Molepo, Lythe Pillay and Marlie Viljoen) finished 2nd in 3:16.42 to take the silver behind Poland and ahead of the USA
