Team SA went into Friday’s action at the World University Games in Germany with a total of 16 medals. The two stars of the squad so far have been swimmer Pieter Coetze and athlete Bayanda Walaza, both who have won double gold. Swimming and athletics had both won eight medals heading into day nine.
Friday’s schedule and results is:
ATHLETICS
Men’s pole vault, qualification: Hendrik van Dyk produced a season’s best 5.40m which saw him qualify for the final in 10th position
Men’s triple jump, qualification: Thato Kgala produced a best leap of 15.35m and qualified 20th, missing out on a place in the final
Men’s 800m, heats: Christopher Swart clocked a time of 1:49.32 and qualified 10th for the final
Women’s high jump, qualification: Kristi Snyman had a height of 1.81m which saw her qualify for the final in 8th position overall
Women’s javelin, qualification: Jana van Schalkwyk threw a distance of 53.65m which saw her qualify for the final in 8th position
ROWING
Men’s pair, heats: Phumelele Tshabalala and Jordan Craig finished 2nd in their heat in 6:56.95 and qualified for the semi-finals
Men’s four, heats: Ehros Smith, Robert Hirshson, Merwe Engelbrecht and Brian Thomson were 3rd in their head in 6:32.41 and are through to the semi-finals
Women’s pair, heats: Katherine Williams and Courtney Westley won their heat in 7:29.97 and they progressed to the semi-finals
