SA stars swim to Commonwealth qualifying times in Durban

The 2014 SA National Aquatic Championships and Commonwealth Games trials got off to a flying start on Monday with four of Mzansi’s best posting qualification times on the opening day of the competition, taking place at the Kings Park Aquatics Centre in Durban.

First in the water and first to post a qualifying time for the 2014 Commonwealth Games was Karin Prinsloo in the 200-metre freestyle.

Prinsloo touched the wall with a golden 1min 58.43sec, inside the required qualification time of 1:58.74. Marlies Ross was second in 2:02.06 and Rene Warnes third with a time of 2:02.30.

Later on in the evening Ross grabbed the gold in the 200m individual medley in 2:15.83 ahead of Warnes, who claimed the silver in 2:16.48, with the bronze going to Tatjana Schoenmaker in 2:19.86.

Myles Brown celebrated his first place finish and Commonwealth Games qualification time of 3:49.05 in the 400m freestyle race, while Brent Szurdoki and Calvyn Justus finished in second and third, with 3:55.72 and 3:55.75 respectively.

Justus also won gold with his 4 x 100m freestyle relay team of Clayton Jimmie, Leith Shankland and Luke Pendock, when they finished with a time of 3:21.40.

Chad Le Clos and Dylan Bosch did not disappoint in the 200m butterfly when they concluded the first day finals session by pencilling in their names for selection to the Games in Glasgow.

Le Clos, who holds the Olympic gold in the event, was first to touch the wall, clocking a fast 1:54.56, to the required 1:57.03.

Bosch, who recently broke the US Open record in the 200m butterfly at the NCAA Championships in Texas, was thrilled to finish with the silver in a qualification time of 1:56.92. Third place went to Sebastien Rousseau in 1:58.73.

Day two heats will start at 9.30am while the finals will begin at 6pm daily.
