SA triathletes win three medals at world school championships

South Africa return from the weekend’s ISF World Schools Triathlon championships in Versailles, France with three medals, writes Mark Etheridge.
The small team competed in age-group events on Saturday and team events the following day.
Two of the medals were won in the individual age-group races and the third in the mixed team relay.
Says manager Katie Roberts: ‘We had a wonderful Championships with three medals. We came second in the mixed team relay (15/16 years) with Angelique Moller, Jamie Riddle, Gizelda Strauss and Ben de la Porte. Gizelda had a fantastic race and won silver in girls (15/16 years) and Ben was also world class with a bronze in boys (15/16 years).
‘All the athletes raced exceptionally well in very competitive fields and made triathlon South Africa incredibly proud.’
In the girls (17/18 years) Madelaine Le Roux narrowly missed out on a medal with a sprint finish but ended up fifth.
Le Roux was part of Team South Africa at the African Youth Games in Botswana last year where she won a gold medal.
Shortly after her race she told Road to RIo 2016:  ‘It was freezing cold and when I jumped into the water for the swim my goggles snapped. So I had to run to the sidelines to ask them to delay because I didn’t have goggles. Then I got goggles but then they started without me. I ended up being on my own on the bike leg and really froze.
‘When I got off the bike I though I was just racing to finish because I thought I was so far back behind the first group. It was so cold I couldn’t even feel my feet but I started running well and catching people. I ended in a sprint finish with a girl from Mexico. I outsprinted her but then she fell and rolled over the mat in front of me! We both got the same time but that’s the luck of the draw. But it was still nice to be able to handle the setbacks etc.
A member of Team SA at last year’s Youth Olympic Games in China, Jayme Sue Vermaas finished eighth in the girls (17/18).
