South Africa’s male water polo players ended their FINA World Championships by going down 11-7 to Kazakhstan in their final match in Kazan, Russia on Thursday.
The South Africans trailed 4-2 in the first quarter, 1-2 in the second, but took honours 2-1 in the third before being outscored 4-2 in the fourth and final section.
In the 11-12th place classification match and watched by a crowd of just under 500, SA’s scorers were captain Pierre le Roux with three, Nic Molyneux (2) and Joao Marco de Carvalho.
The performance by Le Roux was streets ahead of their performance a week ago when they went down 3-14 to the same side in the pool game
‘It was awesome… much better than the first time round,’ Le Roux told Road to Rio 2016. ‘As always, the more we play together the better the team performs. We looked good all game, but just let in two soft goals early in the fourth quarter and that was just a bit too much. I’m very proud of the guys.’
