Spin-offs from Friday’s IBF world title fight between Nkosinathi Joyi and Raul Garcia will be felt for a long time by deceased boxing personality Welsh Mnguni’s children who will be the benefactors of promoter Branco Milenkovic’s largesse.
In this mission Milenkovic enlisted the help of long-time friend, and Gideon Sam, the president of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), and what he calls the Big Five of South African boxing.
Daily Dispatch reporter Sabelo Skiti reports that Sam helped the promoter find needy amateur boxers he can assist in townships around East London.
ÔÇ£Every time I take big fights to places all over the country we try to leave something for the poor communities around the city,ÔÇØ said Milenkovic.
ÔÇ£I have made arrangements with SASCOC’s Gideon Sam to give a donation to amateur boxers in Mdantsane and Duncan Village. Amateur boxers are the future ÔÇô not only for boxing but in life as well.ÔÇØ
The Big Five ÔÇô Anthony ÔÇ£JaguarÔÇØ Morudi, Peter ÔÇ£TerrorÔÇØ Mathebula, Nkosana ÔÇ£Happy BoyÔÇØ Mgxaji, Elijah Tap Tap Makhathini, and Victor Mpiyakhe ÔÇô will be part of the delegation donating equipment to underprivileged amateur boxers in Duncan Village. Makhathini was yet to confirm his availability.
The Big Five will be Milenkovic’s ┬águests in the city the entire weekend, and will watch Friday’s boxing ┬áaction alongside him.
ÔÇ£These are the greatest living boxing legends in the country and it will be the first time they all meet in one place,ÔÇØ said Milenkovic. ÔÇ£It will be especially inspiring for ┬áthe kids and those that used to watch them in the old days.ÔÇØ
Milenkovic has also pledged to ┬ápay all the educational costs of the late Welsh Mnguni’s two daughters.
The nephew of well-known promoter Mzi Mnguni died at his home last October and is survived by his wife and two children aged nine and seven.
The Serb and Mnguni were good friends, and at last week’s press conference Milenkovic felt saddened when he got to the airport and his friend was not there to meet him.
Paying for the children’s education was the least he could do for the family friend he shared a love for sweets with, said Milenkovic.
ÔÇ£He was friends with everyone and played a big role in the development of fighters, as well as success of some of the greatest boxers to come out of Buffalo City in the last two decades,ÔÇØ Milenkovic added.
ÔÇ£Names such as Hawk Makepula, Vuyani Bungu, Zolani Petelo, Mbulelo Botile, just to mention a few, all benefited in some way from working with him.ÔÇØ
