The chief executive officer of the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), Mr Tubby Reddy, has led tributes from the organisation to the Valke Rugby Union and the family of Samuel ‘SJ’ de Beer, who passed away on Monday, aged 57.
‘SASCOC grieves with Saru, the Falcons and especially the De Beer family,’ said Reddy. Saru president, Oregan Hoskins, had issued a statement saying: ‘SJ was one of the stalwarts of club and provincial rugby in South Africa, the type of rugby man without whom our game would wither at the grassroots level.
‘He gave selflessly to our game and was dedicated to his task when taking responsibility for duties within our committees,’ Hoskins added.
‘De Beer was a president of a union who led by example and dedicated an enormous amount of his life into providing good administration. He will be sorely missed and leaves a void that will be difficult to replace,’ Reddy concluded.
