South Africa have retained their position as continental badminton champions after beating Nigeria 3-2 in a nail-biting final round of the Africa Championships Team Event in Marrakech, Morocco.
Starting with mixed doubles, brother and sister combination Wiaan and Annari Viljoen won easily in two sets. Both singles were lost in tight 3-setters on setting in the third set and South Africa then won the two doubles in three sets.┬á With the score on 2-2 and in a race to the wire the mens doubles combination of Dorian James and Wiaan Viljoen managed to pull off the victory by beating the Nigerians in three closely-contested sets.
Earlier South Africa had beaten Mauritius 3-1 in the semi-final, only losing the women’s singles. South Africa were undefeated in their pool games.
In the singles competitions which started on Monday four South Africans played in the opening round of the singles events at the All-Africa Championships. All three women’s singles players won their encounters: Michelle Butler-Emmett beat A Camille from Seychelles┬á 21-18, 21-14 whilst Stacey Doubell beat A Fatima from Nigeria 21-18 21-16.┬á Elme de Villiers won against T Luendo from Botswana 21-13, 21-14.
In the mens singles Andries Malan lost to M Balarbi from Algeria 21-18 21-14 in the opening round.
