The South African team has been named to compete at the 2nd African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana from 22-31 May.
The team will have representation in 19 sporting codes (from aquatics through to weightlifting) at the African Youth Games, an important multicode event serving as Africa’s preparation for the upcoming second Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China later this year.
Biggest code in terms of numbers will be that of athletics with a contingent of 21 representatives. Other codes represented by the green and gold will be: Aquatics, badminton, boxing, canoeing, cycling, fencing, football, golf, judo, karate, rowing, rugby sevens, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball and weightlifting.
The team will be led by Ms Ezera Tshabangu who is Chef de Mission for Team SA, and was the Project Manager/ Deputy Chef de Mission at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
“Team South Africa are expected to do well in Gaborone and cement their position as one of the sporting powerhouses on the continent. These Games are all the more significant due to the fact that the second Youth Olympic Games will be held later in the year and some of the competitors will be able to judge their form at these Games.
“The Games also serve as a platform for qualification for Nanjing for athletics, basketball and swimming. We wish our athletes and officials the best for the Games”
Said SASCOC President Gideon Sam: “The 2nd African Youth Games are very important for the future of South African sport. We need to build our sport from the bottom up and as such, this event will go a long way to exposing our talented youngsters to international competition and giving them valuable experience.”
