The young South African men’s wheelchair basketball team again pulled off an incredible 63-54 win against Morocco, whose woes continue with their third loss of the IWBF World Championship Qualifiers tournament in Luanda, Angola.
With big men Jaco Velloen and Luvuyo Mbanda being benched for five fouls each from some contentious calls, it looked as if the game was all but lost against Morocco. But the incredible line defence and absolute tenacity of a well disciplined display of basketball saw South Africa pull off an awesome win.
Thabane Tshange who struggled all game to hit the basket, finally came to form and young Shane Williams and Kyle Louw combined to finish the final quarter with an impressive three quick baskets in the last 40 seconds and sealed the win. Gift Mooketsi and Mbanda played the game of their lives and impressed with the discipline of seasoned ball players.
Team Sasol SA take on the hosts Angola on Tuesday whilst Egypt and Algeria clash. Egypt who have grown from strength to strength, may cause the upset of the tournament when they take on Algeria.
Angola, having tremendous home crowd support, have thrown down the challenge to Team SA and should put on another crowd pleasing game.
Earlier in the tournament, South Africa had also beaten Egypt and Nigeria.
